New Sales Manager Kicks Off Employment with Elko Mining Expo

Published on June 23, 2011

Thursday, June 23, 2011 (Las Vegas, Nevada) Chris Wolford, Cashman Equipment’s new Elko Sales Manager, was thrown into the deep end of the mining industry pool when he began working for the company in April of this year. Cashman Equipment was already in the final stages of their preparations for one of the city’s biggest draws – the Elko Mining Expo. The annual event is always held the first week of June and draws thousands of people to the area.

With the high price of gold, this year’s Expo was one of the busiest in recent memory. According to Elko tourism officials, every room in town was full and hotels as far as Winnemucca (120 miles west) were housing Expo attendees. Approximately 380 exhibitors occupied 435 of the 469 booths.

“I was more than ready to jump right in at Cashman, but the Expo being so close made it imperative that I get in the swing of things immediately, said Wolford. Fortunately, Wolford has worked in associated industries for years and is familiar with the products and services Caterpillar offers.

Beginning his career with four years in the heavy equipment finance business, Wolford moved on to spend the next twelve years as a partner at Buffalo Machinery Corp of Redding, California. Originally a rental company, it later became a full service distributor for product lines such as Fiat Allis, Timberjack, and Kobelco. Subsequent to Buffalo Machinery, Wolford became the Sacramento Valley general manager of Western Traction / Crescent Machinery, which was followed by opening his own dealership, Sierra Machinery. His Sacramento-based company carried lines such as Komatsu Forestry, Link-Belt, Bomag, and Mustang. Wolford’s extensive knowledge of competitive brands and strong customer-centric operating model provided him with the foundation he needed to meet the immediate job demands at Cashman.

Wolford assisted the sales, work tools, parts, service, rental, power, fluids analysis, lasers, and technology departments in determining what products and services to feature. He also worked with the Elko Convention Center and Cashman’s marketing department in finalizing and setting up the equipment display, which included an exhibit area with a motor grader, backhoe, skid steer, mini-excavator, load-haul dump with customized GET, service truck, light tower, compressor, generator, snow-blower attachment, and telehandler. Cashman’s mini-theme park of heavy equipment had steady foot-traffic both days of the Expo, and attendees visiting stations inside the booth learned more about Cashman Equipment while having an opportunity to win one of five prizes.

“It was quite an introduction to the mining community, summarized Wolford. “The Expo is an impressive representation of the industry, and being a part of Cashman Equipment put me right in the center of it all.
