Q: How did you become an operator trainer?
A: I got into open pit mining training in 1978 with the creation of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). MSHA really opened up the need for trainers who could learn and then teach the new tasks training regulations for each piece of heavy equipment on a mine site. I am currently certified by MSHA for training at gravel/open pit mining operations, which means annual certification renewal to maintain the ability to train operators and maintenance personnel (including Cashman mechanics) moving heavy equipment at gravel/open pit mine sites. OSHA currently has no certification for operators, but I believe in the very near future they will follow MSHA’s lead and begin certifying people.
Q: What machines would you say you do the most training on?
A: Wheel loaders, haul trucks, motor graders, backhoes, and skid steer loaders.
Q: Can you describe your favorite aspect of being an Operator Trainer for Cashman?
A: Training on the latest and greatest Caterpillar machines! Cashman is one of the largest dealerships in North America, so we are often chosen to receive “field follow machines” – new equipment unavailable to the public, but complete and ready for a customer field test. I was one of the first trainers to work with the M-Series Motor Graders, the D7E Electric Drive Track- Type Tractor,  and the 795F AC Electric Drive Haul Trucks.
